Division of Learning Disabilities

Jeannette E. Fleischner Award Outstanding Achievement 2002

Dr. Deborah C. Simmons
Associate Director, Institute for the Development of Educational Achievement
University of Oregon

Deb's research in learning disabilities and reading has led to a number of significant publications. She has authored or co-authored textbooks that are used in graduate and undergraduate courses on instruction and reading research. She has contributed many articles to leading professional journals in learning disabilities, reading, and educational research, and she has developed many curricular materials, some of which are disseminated through the U.S. Department of Education. In addition to her many influential publications, Deb has worked hard to translate research to practice for classroom teachers. Her work in curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment is significant and has reached national prominence. Deb is the consummate scholar and teacher.
