(CAN) Reports

Karen Rooney, CAN Coordinator for the Division for Learning Disabilities, provides brief reports for TeachingLD.org so that visitors can keep informed about important developments in policies affecting students with learning disabilities and their teachers. TeachingLD.org is pleased to offer this page as a place for people concerned with learning disabilities to keep up to date.

12 January 2004

Having just returned from Washington, DC, I want to alert people to the current status of the reauthorization of IDEA. The rumors on Capital Hill related to reauthorization have the Bill being considered in March or early spring with a speedy discussion and vote--or not! No one is quite sure so DLD is already preparing for the next step in the process.

Just to remind you, since this has been a longer process than expected, the House Bill and the Senate Bill will go to Conference to negotiate a Bill that will be the final version. The next opportunity for input will be the development of the regulations, which will add more detail and explanation about the law. DLD is already preparing to be ready to continue to offer input during the Conference process as well as the development of the regulations.

Your input is still valuable. Please continue to show support for the Senate version of the bill and emphasize the retention of cognitive assessment as part of the identification process for individuals with learning disabilities.

For more in-depth coverage, please visit the CEC Web site under the section labeled public policy.

CAN Coordinator, DLD
